Resume Tips for a Career in Internet Marketing

Choose Your Verbs

Action verbs can be a very important part of describing your past employment and experience. Use those verbs to discuss your responsibilities, achievements and what you accomplished. They should be listed in order with the most impressive at the top. An example could be ‘Increased gross margin by x%’ or ‘exceeded the annual goal by June’.

Passive phrases will have less of an impact and should be avoided. For example, ‘Took the lead in sales for my department’. Try to focus on the results and be specific when doing so. Don’t write in the first person.

Customize Your Resume

A master resume should be drafted that covers your education, experience, and skills. When you apply for any position, remove non-relevant information and focus on any skills that will help your prospective employer see why you are the best choice.

Your resume should be modified for the specific position for which you are applying. You can use a template to do this but you will need to customise – this article explains how to do so. It should not take longer than 15 minutes to do so. Scan the job listing to identify what they need and tailor your resume to match. This could include licenses, certifications, experience, etc.

Show Results

Make Your Resume a Single Page

Most people will be able to fit all of their information on a single page. That is especially true if you have limited work experience. Cut out any irrelevant information and keep things very focused on the task at hand. Most hiring managers or recruiters will not take the time to read a long resume. They will scan it quickly and move on.

That being said, don’t skip important details just to force the information onto a single page. If it is necessary to go to a second page to list your skills, then do so.

Check Your Resume Multiple Times for Errors

Any grammatical or spelling errors on your resume are going to jump off the page and make you look unprofessional. Spell check is a good place to start but you might also want to ask some friends or family members to look it over before you use it.

Don’t Exaggerate or Lie

It is important to be honest in all aspects of your resume before you submit it. Lying on your resume about your skills or background will likely come back to haunt you in the future. It might keep you from getting the job and if you do get it, you might not keep it.

Don’t Embellish

Along with being honest, don’t oversell yourself as far as your skills or work history are concerned. You might get into the interview chair when you embellish but they will see through you quickly. What might be even worse is if you land the job and aren’t able to do it.

Don’t Be Afraid To Sell Yourself

Although you would not want to oversell your skills, don’t shy away from promoting yourself in a positive way. If you have done things in the past that got you ahead in your career, put them on your resume. Those accomplishments can help you get far with your prospective employer.

Keep Your Focus

It can be easy to get lost in the details and you might tend to meander in your approach. Be sure not to get bogged down in the minutia. Stay on topic and focus on the job at hand. Avoid the temptation to talk about your hobbies. That doesn’t typically work well for landing the job.

Don’t overlook your work-related history when you are working on your resume. That should be the focus of what you submit.

Be Sure A Relevant Job History Is Included

Your resume should include information about your job history that is focused on the position you are attempting to acquire. Information about jobs you had as a teenager or those that are not associated with your current career choice should be left off of the resume.

Avoid Making Excuses

We have all had hiccups in our history that could have included taking a job with fewer responsibilities of even being unemployed for a time. Don’t try to make excuses for these past actions and don’t dwell on them in your resume. This information is best saved for the time you are speaking face-to-face during your interview.

Give Details About Former Employers

Don’t feel as if your prospective employers are going to know your past employers, even if they are in the same industry and area. Give some information about each company where you worked in the past, but be brief. As an example, you could tell them that a former employer was a ‘service provider offering SEO consulting‘.
